Studio Le Roy Cleeremans

Studio Le Roy Cleeremans consists of Esther Le Roy (French) and Sarah Cleeremans (Belgian-American) and specialises in art direction, editorial design, visual identity, exhibition signage, websites and consulting, with and for local and international clients.

A four-handed exercise that allows us to work on large-scale projects while bringing in additional collaborators—web developer, photographer, illustrator, strategist, to name these few—when needed. As typographers and editorial writers, we not only have a particular interest in the letter and its legibility on paper, screen or in space but also cultivate a typographic approach from macro to micro that allows us to accompany our collaborators—curators, artists, architects, authors, individuals—in the completion of precise, accurate and ambitious projects.

The studio maintains a functionalist approach to design: a practice where signs emerge by necessity of their existence and by their ability to inscribe and narrate stakes and contexts. In this sense, design is no longer a matter of ornamentation or seductive artifice (although it must be able to deliver a sensitive experience), but rather a lever that allows for a singular reading of content, revealing new and/or unseen meanings, always in relation to their contexts, their actors and their stakes. We take a particular interest in critical, independent, or simply unexpected projects, where the need to find existence, form and sharing are at the heart of their endeavour.

The studio has recently conceived the signage and catalogue of the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of architecture 2023 — In Vivo, Demeurer en mycelium/Living in Mycelium. Its work has also been awarded (Best Dutch Book Design 2020, Best Dummy Award 2019), has been presented in international design exhibitions (International Graphic Design Biennial Brno), and is regularly invited for lectures or as a jury member in Belgian and international Art and Design schools.
